Considering Robesons background and his HUAC testimony, can you understand why he and other Americans were attracted to the Communist or socialist cause, and/or the USSR, given the problems that plagued US society in Robesons lifetime? Discuss how America might have looked, from Robesons perspective, when he became attracted to socialism in the 1930s and 1940s, and why he might have thought the USSR was comparably better than the US.
Robeson never said he was a member of the American Communist Party, yet he was clearly sympathetic to it, and he had promoted socialist principles and openly admired the USSR for many years. What ideological or political arguments does he make in the HUAC hearing in defense of his beliefs and previous statements? Are they convincing to you? Why or why not?
