Every section should have its own separate discussion post. Do not relate or compar/contrast each discussion post.
Each discussion post should reflect or proclaim examples in your life.
MUST have 9 sentences or more in each post.
Theme 1:
Classical Condition:
This weeks discussion comes from Chapter 3: Behaviorist Principles and Theories. It addresses the module learning objective, recognize examples of classical conditioning and related phenomena in action .
Please share an example of your own life where you have experienced classical conditioning. Remember that classical conditioning occurs when you learn to associate an unrelated stimulus to a stimulus that naturally causes a reaction. Common examples include conditioned taste aversions, fears and phobias, attitudes and emotional responses.
Theme 2:
Operant Condition:
This weeks discussion topic comes from Chapter 3: Behaviorist Principles and Theories. This discussion addresses the module learning objective, Describe what operant conditioning is and when it is most likely to occur; also, recognize examples of operant conditioning and related phenomena in real-life situations.
In your own life, what reinforcements and punishments have other people used on you to try to change your behavior? Did it work? Why or why not? By reflecting on what reinforcements and punishments have worked on you, does it change how you might relate to other people in the future?
Theme 3:
Operant Conditioning Physical Punishment :
This weeks discussion comes from the reading of the article.
Title: Spanking and Child Development: We Know Enough Now To Stop Hitting Our Children.
Author: Elizabeth T. Gershoff
Source:
Child Development Perspectives, Volume 7, Issue 3, pages 133137, September 2013
See the link in the Modules folder for more information. Full text is available on the BSU library web site on Research Ports Academic Search Premier database. This discussion addresses the learning objective, Discuss the research on the pros and cons to using physical punishment to change behavior.
This article summarizes some of the empirical research that has been done on the benefits and disadvantages of using physical punishment to change behavior in children. This topic can bring up many emotions about how we were raised and how we turned out as adults. When you are reading the article, please remember the saying anecdotes are not data. In other words, the data from research experiments may show that in a large population there is a detrimental effect of spanking but you may not have experienced this detrimental effect yourself, even though you were spanked. The fact that you as an individual do not show the same effects as the participants observed over a large scale research study does not necessarily invalidate the results of the study.
Your discussion topic for this week:
Briefly summarize one part of the paper that was interesting or surprising to you. What was your viewpoint on spanking children before you read this article? What was your reaction to reading this article?
