Crater Lake: Worlds Clearest Water
Oregons Crater Lake is a classic example of a landform produced by volcanic activity. Thousands of years ago a large volcano named Mt Mazama erupted, its magma chamber was thus partially emptied, and the mountain collapsed inward. Crater Lake was thus produced by myriad years of snow melt and rain that filled the basin left behind by the collapsed Mt Mazama. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the USA and the 7th deepest in the world. It is, in fact, the deepest alpine lake in the world. Think that is impressive? Well consider these as toppers:
Crater Lakes water is the clearest in the world and its actually more pure than distilled water. This seems to defy the laws of physics, but its true! Scientists were attempting to measure how far light would transmit through pure (distilled) water but they needed a sample of known clear water to test it against. Crater Lake water was selected, and guess what? Light actually transmitted further through Crater Lake water than distilled water. Scientists cant figure that out.
One of Crater Lakes icons is the Old Man in the Lake. The man is old but it is not a man. It is a 40-foot log that has been bobbing perfectly vertically in the lake for over 100 years. The mans upper three feet are exposed and the rest is under the water. We have no idea how the old man got there, how it is perfectly vertical, and how it has not sunk!
Your Tasks:
Crater Lake is actually not a lake in a crater. It is a lake in a caldera. What exactly is a caldera?
There is a reason why Crater Lake water is so pure. What is the reason?
What are the theories about the Old Man and why is has not sunk?
Other informed info you can provide about this lake is much appreciated.
