1.) Given that you have previously explained the nature and extent of gang violence nationally, briefly outline the nature of the gang issue within Florida. Looking back at the early chapters of your assigned text, compare and contrast the development of street gangs in three of the four regions outlined (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and the South) with those in Florida. How are these trends different and similar? Be sure to use supporting documentation from your text.
2.) As much of the violence associated with gang activity centers on drugs and controlling drug markets, highlight at least 3 research studies (researcher, purpose, location, methodology) and their findings from your textbooks or other assigned readings that illustrate what is known about the gang-drug nexus. Which theories have been used to explain drug activity among gangs? Discuss at least two theories. Be sure to include the role of geographic location by highlighting examples from different cities.
3.) Discuss our historical understanding of female gang membership using both of your texts. How does female gang activity differ from male collective crime? Detail at least 2 key findings from at least two studies of female gang involvement (Moore (1991); Miller’s (2001/2014); Bjerregaard (2002)). How does race and class inform our understanding of female gang activity? Lastly, explain the 3 gender-specific treatment for girls in gangs.
4.) Outline two micro-level theories of gangs and two macro-level theories. Identify the theorist, main principles, and at least one empirical study that supports each theory. Which one of the four theories do you think offers the best explanation and why?
