The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity for students to briefly explore another individuals emic worldview. The expectation is that the student will gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare practices of an unfamiliar culture and begin to apply transcultural concepts into their nursing practice. Using APA 7th edition format, students will include the following in their paper: 1. Provide an overview of the cultural immersion experience and discuss:
The difficulties, successes, feelings about the experience.The impact of completing the cultural-self assessment, journaling activities, and cultural immersion project.
2. Review of the literature 3. Data collection 4. Identify all of the major categories or themes you discovered 5. Discuss three of the major themes/categories and provide a discussion of each of the following for each of the 3 major categories/themes: Non-health care related values and beliefs of the culture related to the category/theme Health/illness beliefs and practices related to the category/theme
Any other phenomenon identified by the informant as it relates to the category/theme Include no less than 3 sources to support your findings (sources may include interview notes, journal entries, cultural documents, scholarly resources) 6. Make recommendations about how you will promote culturally congruent care for this cultural population.
7. Identify how your nursing practice will improve or has improved based on this learning experience. 8. Other requirements: Maximum seven pages, excluding title page and reference page. 12-pt font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, numbered pages.
I chose the Chinese Culture. Overall I had a great experience in this class, including with the interview with a elderly chinese lady i met. I learned a lot about how become a culturally congruent nurse.
