Chapt 4 Discussion FEDERALISM
Federal & State Government Cant They Get Along
Politicians and citizens have been arguing about it for 200+ years and were still arguing about it today. In short, which level of government, national or state (or local) can/should make the best policy decisions to meet the needs of its citizens?
Heres your opportunity to discuss the issue and weigh in with your positions and arguments. When framing your response, consider my comments in the Lecture to this chapter, the content of the Janda.
Your response should be approximately 400+ words.
Pick ONE of the following 3 questions for your response. Make SURE you begin your response by using # 1,2 or 3.
#1 Questions about the relative power of the federal government and state governments are frequently at the heart of contemporary political issues. Using the cake metaphors in Janda, explain which cake model(s) you believe is best. Give specific examples to support you position.
#2 Take a position on the following proposition. Modern communication and transportation have made it possible for national government to make and enforce all necessary laws. Therefore, the 50 state goverments should be abolished and their powers and functions should be transferred to the national government. Support your position with specific examples.
#3 Conservatives generally support the return of power and responsibility to the states. This is often referred to as devolution. Liberals wish to maintain the strong role of the national government. Which side to you tend to support? Is it possible to support both sides? Are there historical examples/situations that illustrate the benefit of each perspective? Give specific policy examples to validate your position.
