Your Middle publish of Essay 1 should be 3-5 pages, typed, double-spaced. In it you will expand on the argument you began making in your Exploratory publish (see the Exploratory publish Prompt in Module 1 for details about that publish).
As you expand from your Exploratory publish, use your peer’s feedback and clarify your central interpretive claim; form body paragraphs with clear subclaims; add in ample textual evidence (plenty of direct quote) as needed.
In addition, in your Middle publish, you are also required to make a connection between the story you are analyzing and something outside of the story itself. For example: your own experience (or that of someone close to you), a relevant cultural or historical moment/ detail, or another text (written/visual/ lyrical). For example, you might include a personal narrative about something related that you’ve experienced, analyzing how it adds to or deepens your understanding of Kincaid or O’Brien’s idea overall, or of one of your subclaims about the meaning of that first story. OR you can incorporate analysis and discussion of an outside text [story/ novel/ poem/ song lyric/ advertisement… whatever comes to mind] to do the same. No research or academic secondary sources are required or expected. The point is to enrich and deepen your thinking about the meaning of “Girl” or “TTTC,” and to help your reader see how/ why it is significant (ie, so what?)
