You will watch the Jonestown Documentary during class time on 10/3/22 and will complete your assigned Reflection on the content.
Please be sure you are writing in APA format by including a title page, reference page, running head and page number throughout, within text-citations, use of resource, and double-spaced throughout. (abstract is not necessary for reflection assignments). Your assignment should be 2-4 pages in length (page count does not include title or reference pages).
Please introduce your paper by discussing The People’s Temple (who, what, where, why and when). Be sure to introduce the key players, including Jim Jones and how he developed The People’s Temple. You will discuss a timeline of Jim Jones and The People’s Temple, leading to the outcome of Jonestown in November 1978. You will then discuss elements of Social Psychology that contribute to tragedies such as Jonestown. You will discuss characteristics of Jim Jones and breakdown the various biological, developmental, and environmental factors of Jones that might have contributed to his leading a massive following. You will discuss characteristics of the members and what made these individuals particularly vulnerable to joining and staying in The People’s Temple. You will then discuss the theory of Cognitive Dissonance and how it pertains to The People’s Temple and Jonestown and then compare and contrast The People’s Temple to other group events that are similar, such as Heavens’ Gate, The Branch Davidians, or the Sullivanians.
You should then conclude your reflection assignment by summarizing the connection of The People’s Temple and group behavior to major concepts in Social Psychology and how as a society, we might avoid tragedy in the future.
