You will conduct independent research to address the social responses to healthcare access in the U.S. in comparison to another developed country (e.g., Germany, U.K., Canada, Sweden, France, Australia, etc.). You will need to be very specific about key similarities and differences in these countries approach to healthcare access. You may focus on one key topic (e.g., COVID and the uninsured costs, or maternal and infant care, or elderly care, or university student healthcare access, etc.). But it is important that you provide a clear framework for comparison, (e.g., costs, policy debates, socialized vs privatized care, access i/equalities, etc.). It is also VERY important that you search the literature available on your topic of interest. You don’t want to pick a topic for which you will not have sufficient research sources!
The research needs to reflect on the pros and/or cons of socialized vs. privatized care and what it would take to have a healthcare paradigm shift. Delve into matters of costs and ethics when it comes to healthcare access. As we any good research paper, you must pay attention to the evidence and assess it critically. Once you map out the various positions for and against universal healthcare access, look at issues of vulnerabilities and equity of access. Here you may want to utilize any of the analytical frameworks covered in this class (e.g., structural violence, vertical and horizontal financing and power, stigma, etc.).
