You are an aspiring administrator who will be placed at a school where the administrator is retiring. Your primary role is to assist in transitioning the current principal out and preparing to orient the new principal with critical information. You have the sole responsibility of collecting information about the school using a variety of methods, i.e. interviews (administrator, staff, community stakeholders, parents, etc.) and looking at school documents, i.e SIP, SAC minutes, budget, training data, and logs, etc. During your principal preparation program, you were afforded opportunities to build your knowledge and skills in the areas of social justice education n (ex: equity, student-centered learning environment, bias threat, institutional biases, identity safety), understanding diversity, identifying the tenants of a school vision statement, to name a few. You will need to apply this learning to this scenario. School background: The current principal has been at the school for the past 25 years. The school has been an A-rated school for over the past 15 of the 25 years the principal has led the school. The school’s demographic and student diversity changed in year 16 as a result of an influx of students from a recently constructed apartment complex for low-income residents. During that year, the school dropped from an A to a C. The school has never managed to get back to its A status since then. The teachers and community feel it’s because of the students coming from this neighborhood or complex. Teacher morale is low and parents from the new apartment complex don’t feel welcomed or supported by staff based on a recent school climate survey. The school’s vision and mission statement has not altered in the past 15 years because the community feels it still reflects the school’s commitment. It reads, “Our vision is to develop well-rounded, confident, and responsible individuals who aspire to achieve their full potential. We will do this by providing a welcoming, happy, safe, and supportive learning environment in which everyone is equal and all achievements are celebrated.” This assignment is a culminating assignment that touches on all of the assignments in this course. As such the required readings and resources are essential to your success AND how you apply them throughout the course. Outcome: The goal of the scenario is to conduct an initial interview with the outgoing principal using the concepts learned in your principal preparation program and the readings on the concepts to demonstrate your understanding and mastery of the topics. The interview scenario and resources will also provide you with an experiential approach to your learning that magnifies how you fulfil the course objectives. Strategies/Best practices to consider: Apply the required knowledge building resources to this scenario and ALL assignments of the course to demonstrate understanding of the concepts Transfer the examples from the resources and interview scenario to your on personal leadership profile to identify qualities of an effective school leader Reflect on the scenario beyond its implications to any school and how the role of the leader and their responsibilities shape the school culture, establishes systems and routines, and priorities educational goals.
