What Makes It Deviant?
In this first section of the course, we’ve explored how deviance and ‘normal’ co-define each other, how ‘normal’ is a powerful construct that shapes our social worlds and lives, and how systems of control have been established to regulate our behaviors. We’ve also looked at various definitions and categorizations of ‘deviance’ and the impact that context has on defining an act, behavior or condition as deviant. For this first installment of your case study, I want you to apply these ideas to your chosen topic. What makes it deviant and why? Has the response to your chosen case changed over time? If so, why? How?
This first piece should work as an introduction to your topic. Tell me what it is, give a brief history of it, use course material and your three to five outside sources to explain it as an example of deviance.
Papers should be 3-5 in length. Summarize and explain the relevant theoretical concepts and their meaning as they relate to your argument and/or analysis. I will be looking for a clear argument, familiarity with relevant material, and a robust analysis (application of concept to a specific example; employing sociological concepts and theories to answer ‘why’?
