This course requires a research paper. You will identify, research, and develop a persuasive essay on a contemporary policy issue of significant social value that is controversial. This project will have a public policy focus and to keep it simple you must select and advocate for or against a current piece of legislation. You may select currently proposed or recently voted on legislation at the local, state, or national level to support or oppose. The law/policy must be no older than 12 months and ideally has not been implemented or denied yet.
The first part of the research paper assignment requires that you identify and research an appropriate topic. This paper will be roughly three (3-4) pages in length or around 1400-2200 words. In it you must identify your proposed topic, explain the context and controversy surrounding your topic, and identify clearly your proposed position on the topic. You must cite a minimum of 5 credible sources specifically relevant to your topic.
HiThe research paper will require that you examine the history and context of the controversial policy issue you have selected. In addition, you will need to take a clear position supporting or opposing the policy/law. Finally you will fully support your position and make an appeal to your audience attempting to persuade them to agree with you. Your prospectus is short essay explaining the history and context of your topic, its significance, and why it is controversial.
