Prompt: Choose one of the readings from the folder Thematic Essay 1: Revolution, Early Republic, Jacksonian Era.
Read the chapter or article, and write a short paper of at least 1500 words assessing its argument, its main claim, or the story that it creates, correctly identifying the author’s message and the way the author structures and supports that message, with clear and precise language. After doing that, critique this argument/claim/story based on your own reading of the textbook, sources, and our class discussions. You should use at least three primary sources from Perusall and the textbook to provide a context and a framing for the reading you choose. You will need to assess which chapter and which sources may help you with your analysis–I will not do that for you. That is part of what historical research is about.
Regarding “critique”, the Oxford Lexico project defines it as “a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory.” We are not talking about “historical criticism,” which is an approach to ancient texts.
