At the top of this week’s module, in reference to the above Unicef advertisement, I wrote: “the main portion of the text is the powerful image of the child which uses the rhetorical appeal of pathos to work upon the audience for a purpose.” What is rhetoric? What is the concept of a Rhetorical Appeal? What is Pathos? How does Unicef use pathos in this advertisement toward their purpose? What is the purpose of Unicef’s advertisement? Why do you think Art Spiegelman chose the genre of the graphic novel for the narrative of Maus? In relation to the previous question, which page (or single panel) exemplifies Spiegelman’s rhetorical choice of the graphic novel and why? (My answer, for example, would be: “The top half of page 17 exemplifies Spiegelman’s rhetorical choice of the graphic novel as the photo of Anja as a young woman gives life to the character from the distant past. As the image of Anja does not appear in the main narrative, but as a casual aside, I do not think a regular novel would be able to achieve the same concise depiction”).
I am asking you to compose a flowing paragraph that answers these questions. I DO NOT WANT a paragraph that is a point by point, sentence by sentence, list of answers. Try to discuss multiple questions in one sentence. Flex your creative muscle. Use the transition words and writing skills learned in some of the other resources from this week. Again, these reading questions are not only to see if you’ve completed and understood the readings? It is also an opportunity to practice writing, to practice synthesizing the idea of all this week’s readings into a cohesive response.
