while watching Seasons 1, 2, and 3 of POSE on Hulu.
Pose provides us with an elongated visual representation of the histories of Black and Latinx trans communities, sex work, and the AIDS epidemic in 1980s/1990s New York City. Through richly developed characters played by queer and trans actors and authentic depictions of Black and Latinx queer and trans survival, community, joy, and heartache, Pose enters the American popular culture landscape as a critical contribution to feminist and queer/trans television archives.
How does Pose do this? Using the course readings and your POSE Graphic Organizer from the weeks in Module II, craft an analytical essay that explores Pose’s depictions of community and criminality. Where and how do we see the characters thriving and building various forms of community? Where and how do we see the characters being criminalized, policed, and excluded? How are these stories shared throughout the three seasons? What larger messages about policing, white supremacy, homophobia, transphobia, whorephobia, violence, and classism do we learn from Pose? What larger messages do we learn about intergenerational community, love, survival, and resistance?
