This week, we focused in on childhood experiences, and unfortunately, a common experience for many is bullying. Bullying is defined as repeated, systematic attacks intended to harm those who are unable or unlikely to defend themselves. It can take the form of at least one of four types: physical, verbal, relational, or cyberbullying. Research has suggested several contributing factors to explain why bullying happens, such as the influence of a child’s parents and what sort of peer groups they’re in. Research has also looked at the consequences, some which can last for years afterwards, that affects individuals who are the victims of bullying. Because of the potential for long-term effects, it’s imperative to understand how to prevent bullying from occurring, or how to best intervene when it does happen. For this discussion assignment, you will be reading and reviewing one of these studies that looked at bullying prevention and/or intervention.
First, you will have to find an empirical, peer-reviewed research article. Click on the “Library Help” link to the left, as part of this Canvas course shell. Then click on “Find Articles & Books” and select one of the three databases. If you can’t find any interesting or relevant articles in one database, try another. You will want to do a search with “bullying” in the first field, and then either “prevention” or “intervention” in the second ‘AND field, to find the largest number of possible articles. In addition, you can choose to do a more narrow focus. You could put “adolescence” in the third search field to focus on that age range, or replace “bullying” with “cyberbullying”.
Now that you have read through your chosen article, answer the following questions in a short essay format, sticking to APA style:
What is the title of the article?
In what journal was the article published?
What was the purpose of the study?
What exactly were the hoping to accomplish with this study?
What were the methods?
How did their intervention or prevention work?
What was/were the result(s) as it pertains to bullying prevention and/or intervention? Does it seem the study accomplished what it set out to do?
What are two things you learned about bullying prevention and/or intervention, either in general or in terms of this specific method, by reading this article?
