This paper is an opportunity for you to apply a sociological lens to your everyday life. You can choose an event or incident (or series of incidents) from your life to reflect on how this incident/event shaped your gendered sense of self (identity, self-expression, presentation etc.); or how this incident/event presented an opportunity for you to rethink/question or challenge your own gendered expectations and assumptions. If you don’t want to focus on one incident or event, you can also reflect on how your everyday life is shaped by gender (this could be adhering to the norms and expectations, tweaking or negotiating norms, rebelling and living outside the norms). Your paper should clearly integrate your reflections with the concepts and readings from the class such as social construction, intersectionality, hegemonic masculinity, hybrid masculinities, “fag discourse,” feminist consumerism and others.
Preparing your papers:
Your paper should not exceed 3-4 double-spaced pages.
Use 12-point font, Times New Roman, with 1-inch margins.
Incorporate at least two class readings to discuss your experiences
Strong essay:
Written as a cohesive essay
Engages with the readings and judiciously use quotes to substantiate the point you are making
Crafted well with clear flow and clear writing style
