RESPOND TO IN A MIN OF 175 WORS
Identify an example of a criminal justice agency utilizing social media during a critical incident investigation. What are gunshot detection systems and how do they help police? What are license plate readers and how do they help combat crime? What is human trafficking and why is it difficult to identify the victims of this crime? How is social media used by traffickers and how can police use it to catch traffickers? Be sure to research, provide information or statistics and cite your sources.

Identify an example of a criminal justice agency utilizing social media during a critical incident investigation. During and after January 6th, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified scores of rioters from public posts and records subpoenaed from social media platforms. Prosecutors use the posts to build cases. Judge now are citing defendants’ words and images as factors weighing in favor of tougher sentences. What are gunshot detection systems and how do they help police?
Gunshot detection systems use acoustic sensing technology to identify, discriminate, and report gunshots to the police within seconds of the shot being fired. A gunshot detection system is comprised of sensors to detect the sound of a gunshot, transmitters to send a message to the police dispatch center, and a computer to receive and display that message. When a signal arrives at the police station, the dispatcher decides whether or not to send a unit to respond to the signal. What are license plate readers and how do they help combat crime?
Automated license plate readers (ALPRs) capture computer-readable images of license plates. These high-tech devices allow law enforcement agencies to compare plate numbers against those of stolen cars or cars driven by people suspected of being involved in criminal or terrorist activities. What is human trafficking and why is it difficult to identify the victims of this crime? How is social media used by traffickers and how can police use it to catch traffickers?
Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of people through force, fraud, or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit. Identifying victims of human trafficking can be difficult because traffickers often isolate victims from their families, communities, and the public. Victims are sometimes kept locked behind closed doors. Victims of human trafficking can also be hidden in plain sight. Social often uses social media apps as a way to post their victims or recruit more. One of the critical strategic resources available to both law enforcement agencies and Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is digital intelligence (DI) technology.
DI tools include automated data extraction solutions that can help to obtain, preserve and analyze private and public social media data, activities, backups and other cloud-based content using a forensically sound and lawful process.
RESPOND TO IN 175 WORDS LAUREN The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) utilizes the Next Generation Identification (NGI) System as its facial recognition technology for investigative purposes (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2019). For example, the FACE (Facial Analysis, Comparison, and Evaluation) Services Unit provides facial recognition support for closed cases (i.e., missing and wanted persons) at federal, state, and local levels through face images of people. Gunshot detection systems detect gunshots through the principles of triangulation and sensors to accurately detect and locate gunfire (Choi et al., 2013). When a sound wave produced by gunshots is detected, the system sends an alert to E-911/dispatcher centers with the location and classification. After the initial notification, the dispatch center deploys officers to the locations.
License plate readers (LPRs) are devices that capture images of license plates that notify law enforcement agencies of the time and location of capture. For example, LPRs detect many factors, from expired registration to a license plate on a stolen vehicle. These devices help combat crime by quickly notifying law enforcement of when and where these vehicles are in hopes of locating them shortly after. According to the Department of Homeland Security (2022), human trafficking “involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act” (par. 1). Factors such as language barriers, fear of their traffickers, and/or fear of law enforcement prevent victims from seeking help (Department of Homeland Security, 2022). Traffickers utilize social media to stalk, lure, or blackmail victims actively. On the other hand, law enforcement can utilize social media to obtain information on suspects and the locations of victims. Law enforcement can obtain this information through digital intelligence technology, which includes automated data extraction solutions (Parker & Gambill, 2021).
