Research Paper/ Modern Drama
The topic of this essay is Troy Maxson’s character. Develop body paragraphs by identifying Troy’s struggle to provide for his family and how successfully/unsuccessfully he relates with friends, his sons, and his wife. End the paper with a paragraph showing how family behavior in Troy’s family is (or is not) cyclical. Provide the best evidence from the play for each, support from the Heller article and two critical sources (from the college databases) to support your claims. Evidence from the play and from the outside sources should be indicated in the essay parenthetically and on a Works Cited page. There should be four sources cited in your paper and listed on your WC page – the play, the Heller article, and two sources from college databases. Format your paper according to MLA guidelines. You may use this Sample PaperDownload Sample Paper as a model.
This is a research paper and counts 150 points – more than your other essays. You are required to find two articles from the college databases and use them as sources in your paper. One article should be about Troy and his character (Use Gale to find this article) and one should be about the cycle of violence (Use psychology databases to find this article). The Research LibguideLinks to an external site. in Research Resources lists several books that would be great sources. There is also a World Health Organizations pamphlet on ViolenceDownload World Health Organizations pamphlet on Violence that would be a great source, as well. This essay should be approximately 1250-1500 words.
When writing research papers, there are several organizational choices. I have offered you one but feel free to choose the outline that meets your needs best and use it.

A. Lead-in – Comment on what every man wants for his family or the struggles with family relationships – something common to the play and to readers alike. Just a suggestion.
B. Bridge- Be sure at some point in the intro paragraph to mention the title of the play and the author – Fences by August Wilson. The bridge should provide a one-to-two sentence summary and lead into the topic of the thesis.

The format for using direct quotes as evidence in your essay is as follows:
Hamlet shows himself to be resolved to act on his father’s request when he sees Fortinbras and his men marching to reclaim a tiny bit of land that is in itself of no consequence: “O, from this time forth / My thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth” (Shakespeare 1183). When Hamlet sees the loyalty of Fortinbras’ men and their willingness to follow him regardless of proof or evidence, he is ashamed of his own delay in exacting revenge for his father’s murder.
The format for paraphrasing is similar:
Hamlet is inspired to action when he sees Fortinbras and his men marching to reclaim a tiny bit of land -that is in itself no consequence – when he resolves that his thoughts will be bloody or they are worth nothing (Shakespeare 1183). Hamlet is shamed by Fortinbras’ men and their loyalty to his cause without the need for proof or evidence.
Notice that in both examples, the quote or paraphrase is introduced first. The quotes or paraphrases should also be explained. A body paragraph should never end with a quote or paraphrase; end with the explanation.
