Rhetorical Analysis Outline Assignment
Sample Prompt
Shortly after launching a non-violent direct action protest in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested. Upon his arrest several white clergy members from the state published a letter denouncing the use of direct action by the protesters. From his jail cell, King published this letter. Read the letter carefully. Then, write a well-developed essay in which you analyze the choices King makes to convey his message to the audience.
Some Tips based on the Rubric:
THESIS:
Your thesis/intro should:
Identify the author, the occasion, and the context of the piece of writing.
Identify the thesis of the piece of writing
identify the purpose of the piece of writing
and identify the choices that the author made to
(1)support their thesis and
(2)achieve their purpose.
FOCUS ON CHOICES, NOT DEVICES
EVIDENCE AND COMMENTARY:
Your evidence and commentary should be driven by PURPOSE. What is the speaker’s purpose and how do they make moves to achieve that purpose? Think of that while you construct your three points.
Topic sentence should identify the strategy, rhetorical technique, choice, or “move” that the author makes to advance the thesis. Think less in terms of devices, and more in terms of choices
To SUPPORT, you needed to include quotes and explain how those examples, techniques, choices (etc.) contributed to the overall message and purpose of the piece.
SOPHISTICATION:
The “sophistication” domain reads: “Demonstrates sophistication of thought and/or a complex understanding of the rhetorical situation.”
You must demonstrate an understanding of the interaction between the choices an author makes, their purpose, their message, the audience, and the occasion. ALL of the moving parts of the rhetorical situation.
