Essay #4 Guidelines
This essay can use any topic related to gender or sexual identity (LGBT community). Always keep in mind that it should be argumentative; make certain your point is one that can be argued.
Keep these things in mind:
Take a formal, academic approach.
Avoid religious or theological Also, do not address the issue of abortion or abortion rights.
If writing about the LGBT community in any way offends you, simply address a gender issue: equal pay, equal access to education, or something similar.
If in doubt, submit your essay topic for approval via email prior to completing your intro paragraph.
Examples:
As the recent World Cup clearly indicated, women soccer players should receive pay equal to their male counterparts.
The Canadian preferred pronoun law should be dismissed because it hinders free expression of Canadian residents.
For ideas, look over current news headlines; also, you can consider historical topics.
Guidelines:
Make certain you put your name on your essay
Essay length should be 550-600 words; please do not exceed 600 words (word count should not include works cited)
You need at least two sources; make certain that you include two full citations at the end of your essay; you cannot use websites or blogs, and make certain your newspapers are credible sources. There are also scholarly articles available.
Begin with a strong, argumentative thesis; make certain your topic sentences are argumentative as well (you do NOT want to include quotes or specific references in your intro paragraph or in your topic sentences)
Use those transition words and phrases
Be formal and academic; do not use words such as I, Me, Our, Us, We, or similar words; try to eliminate You and Your as well
Save your essay in Word format (no PDF files, please); attach in Canvas
