Instruction
This is a short (3 pages double-spaced 12pt font) written report about the designer Yves Saint Laurent. Showing why designer Yves Saint Laurent was important to the History of Modern Fashion, using carefully selected words and images to encapsulate an entire career.
Remember, you are discussing the individual designer, not the brand: Yves Saint Laurent himself, not the brand Yves Saint Laurent or later creative directors. Think about the person’s background, location, career trajectory, business model, and public persona. Who or what influenced them, and how did they influence which future designers? Show the clothes, discuss the details (fabric, construction, embellishments), the market and customer, and, overall, their impact on fashion. You won’t have time for all of this, so be strategic in your choices.
In your written report, include at least one primary source (period news or magazine articles, interviews, video, surviving garments in museums or collections) and at least one secondary source (scholarly article or book; readings from the syllabus, or elsewhere, reliable databases, such as the FIT Fashion History Timeline). Do not use Wikipedia! All sources and quotes must be properly cited, using footnotes, and you should provide a bibliography of all your written sources at the end. Images must also be accurately and completely cited in a separate list.
