Greetings CHHS professionals! In our differing occupations, we do not have the luxury of selecting the individuals that may seek us out for assistance. There are many times when CHHS professionals are not given all the details and either must learn information on their own (continuing education) or have to work within the context of the information given to them. These encounters may cause a CHHS professional to serve as a resource person and subsequently make referrals to other community agencies; thus, we must be aware of other organizations and the services they offer.
Instructions: For this task choose either the case of Adam or Kara and address the questions that follow. Keep in mind that this is a post-first discussion board and if you post a blank message and then post your original work you will receive a grade of zero. While there may not be right or wrong answers it is our opportunity to learn how each would respond and how that response would differ. You are also required to post two substantive responses to classmates for full credit. Case: Adam (your client) a man with an intellectual disability, lives alone with his widowed mother. She has fallen and broken her hip and will be at the rehabilitation hospital for about four weeks. He cannot stay alone. He has a job at Goodwill Industries. Country transportation takes him there every morning at 8:30 a.m. and brings him home at 5:00 p.m.
Discussion Questions:
-At first impression, how comfortable are you working with Adam? What personal biases do you have?
-What steps could you take in your discussions with Adam that would help him to create a plan in the absence of his mother?
-What would you do to ensure that Adam had meals and other necessities? It is not your job to cook for him (unethical) but are there services in your local area that you could refer him to?
-What kinds of concerns do you have for Adam if you were working as his human services professional case manager? Case: Kara and her two children are waiting to receive their welfare check. They came to Alabama from Florida to escape an abusive husband and father. Kara is frail and appears sick. They have no plan or place to go and have not eaten in several days. The children smell as if they need a bath and are listless. You have been assigned as the lead human services worker on Kara’s case and are familiar with her hardships.
Discussion Questions:
-At first impression, how comfortable are you working with Kara? What personal biases do you have?
-What professional organizations might you consult with to provide assistance to Kara and her children?
-Does Kara understand the impact of spousal abuse and how might you help her to find mental health supports?
-With regards to the children, what is within your scope of human services practice and how might you connect them with services?
