Hi all – as promised here are the details on your first critical review that will be due a week from today (10/6), submitted as a hardcopy in class. This is the first of three, and just as a reminder you can do the three reviews in any order (playlist/live concert/open selection) but be sure to complete all three categories by the end of the semester. If you want to keep it as simple as possible, I would start with the playlist. Here’s the information regarding formatting as it appears in the syllabus (additional information can also be found on the class 11 slides on D2L under Class 11):
Concert/Recording Critical Reviews (3) – 45%.
Each review should be two pages, double spaced, and submitted electronically.
? Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12 and 1 inch margins.
? Each review should discuss the style and time period of the music as well as the emotional content. For live performances, the student should discuss what they notice from the performers during the concert and how that changes the quality of the music versus listening to a recording.
? Reviews should include the name the conductor (if conducted), orchestra/ensemble, name of piece and composer.
? The deadlines for the reviews will be staggered through the semester, typically falling on days when we switch time periods in class. I will announce deadlines in advance during class to allow time to complete each review.
? Content of reviews (these can be completed in any order) will include:
¦ Selection of music from a list of assigned repertoire.
¦ Review of a live performance. (Free performances will be announced throughout the semester and are available on the music department’s calendar.)
¦ The music chosen for the final review is fully up to the student. There will be no length requirement (you can review a single song, or an entire album, etc…) but it must be something that you feel strongly about.
