Data from multiple sources are used in the appraisal and synthesis to guide evidence-based clinical decision-making. Nurses must integrate all evidence with their clinical expertise and patient preferences and values to make practice decisions or change. All potential or current nurse leaders must acknowledge and address cultural diversity among staff and patients. It is our ethical responsibility to involve patients in decisions regarding their care. The patient, community, or cultural factors are part of “weighing in” on the evidence.
Identify patient, community, or cultural barriers related to your chosen problem/issue. How can you address this barrier and maintain ethical responsibility?
For example, a patient might not be able to afford the best available option, or it may not want to use that option at all. Perhaps health literacy is a barrier to the patient’s ability to comprehend health-related information to make appropriate, informed health decisions.
***Cultural competence is the barrier you will write about***
