The Analytical Essay
*Readings are from the course text, Monsters*
Mary Shelley’s From Frankenstein: “The Modern Prometheus,” Pages 20-22
Here’s what to do:
1. Read the selection and pay close attention to Frankenstein’s features.
2. Break his Monsterish being into three separate parts.
3. What do these parts make you feel? Scared, sad, worried?
4. The way Frankenstein makes you feel is your thesis.
5. The three parts of his body that create a reaction in you are the three main points.
Next:
Write a five-paragraph essay exploring Frankenstein’s physical appearance and the way this monster makes you feel.
Specifically, focus on an analysis of three parts of Frankenstein and the emotions that these parts elicit from you. Each part can cause a different emotion in you, or each one can lead to the same feeling. Just make sure you make the connection between Frankenstein’s appearance and the emotion you feel clear. Support your main points with quotes from Shelley’s work.
Requirements:
The five-paragraph essay structure.
Four full pages of writing—not including a Works Cited page.
A minimum of three quotes for each body paragraph correctly cited according to MLA regulations.
A Works Cited page correctly formatted according to MLA regulations.
