Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider the most fundamental organizing structures humans havefamily. All societies use kinship as the basic building blocks for forming social groups and classifying people. However, there is extensive variability in the rules and patterns in how people make families. Although we dont often frame family in this way, we recognize that the patterns of family life serve to fulfill a number of needs. To think of this another way, we might think of the kinds of responsibilities or expectations we have for family members and they have for us, such as who cares for children, who you can borrow money from when you need it, who will get your grandmothers jewelry, etc. In this assignment, you will first consider your own family tree. Once youve completed your own kinship chart, youll be asked to create a list, where you will be asked to go beyond family members to consider other social relationships you have that come with similar expectations. Finally, as a group, youll be asked to pull your individual experiences together and show us how you might organize all of these connections into a kind of chart.
