Length: Minimum–500 words
Note: You may use a secondary source from this paper for your Common Assignment if it is a scholarly article from a reputable literary periodical or a scholarly article from a book of critical essays on the literary work.
You must use a minimum of three sources, one of which must be from an academically reliable secondary source (Wikipedia, Spark Notes, and the like, are not academically reliable sources.) A secondary source is one in which a writer discusses an aspect or aspects of the literary work you have read. For example, if you are writing a paper on the theme of Updike’s “A&P,” then “A&P” is the primary source. Any sources that discuss or explain aspects of it are secondary sources. An academically reliable source—journal articles, articles from books with articles of literary criticism about a literary work—can be found through a reputable college or university library, such as any of the Alamo colleges’ libraries.
Use in-text citations—pp. 1852-1854 in the 14th edition of the text.
Incorporate a Works Cited page—pp. 1854-1859, 1866-1871 in the 14th edition of the
text.

Very Important: Do not provide your opinion of the story. Instead, find a source (article from a literary journal or book of criticism about your subject, etc.) and use that writer’s assertions to substantiate your claims.
Do not use statements such as, “I believe, “I think,” or similar statements that assert your opinion. You may provide your own opinion directly in a Response Paper, but not in an Analysis Paper using research. Unless you have a degree in literature, you are not an expert.
Instead, make statements such as “According to Rita Dove and Marilyn Nelson, the speakers in Langston Hughes’ poems use several voices….” or “Rita Dove and Marilyn Nelson state that the speakers in Langston Hughes’ poems use several voices….” Always document your statements using sources with MLA in-text citations.
In selecting one of topics below, be sure to indicate how a particular aspect of the subject you selected below contributes to the story, play or poem in a significant way, such as how that aspect adds to a reader’s appreciation of the literary work or how it contributes to the artistry of the literary work. Be sure to provide specific support for your assertions.
