The Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography
After you have identified and collected the five (5) required peer-reviewed articles you will be using for your paper, the first thing you need to do is read them and annotate them.
Why: We annotate articles to help us remember what the article was about, and what the main arguments in the article were. We select a number of articles at a time, and usually read them one after another, which may lead to us mixing up ideas and articles if we dont keep track of them. Before we are ready to write, we need to know what are the ideas that we are going to focus on and, since it is a research paper, we need to know what experts in the field are saying. We have to keep track of these arguments and ideas. To help us remember, we write an annotated bibliography.
How to do this: Prepare your annotations by writing the full article reference, following APA guidelines (in the fields of Education and Social Sciences, we mostly use APA) and immediately follow with 3-5 sentences capturing the most important things of the article that you want to keep in mind. See for below for an example of an annotation. Notice (1) the full reference in APA (2) a short paragraph highlighting the study used in this article and how it was conducted.
Herman, J. (2004). Assessing the Effects of Standardized Testing on Schools. Educational and
Psychological Measurement (54.1) pp.471-482.
This article gives statistical data collected from upper elementary teachers in 48 different schools. 450 questionnaires were sent to the teachers to get information on what they thought of standardized testing. Questions included: how much pressure is felt from the principal or school district, how much time is spent reviewing for standardized tests, and to what extent changes in test scores are due to a change in instruction. The surveys were given out to all types of schools, poor and wealthy, and approximately 341 were received back
