Chapter 8: Survey Research
Any decision about research design involves trade-offs and compromises between such goals as achieving measurement reliability and validity, generalizability, and cost-effectiveness. This project focuses on one such trade-off: the decision to use open- or closed-ended questions.
The following topics have been used for a survey of college students.
Pick one.
Identify one hypothesis (tentative statement about a relationship between two or more variables). For instance: students having negative interactions with roommates are likely to perform poorly in school.
Health and behavioral consequences of binge drinking
The influence of roommate on academic performance
publish two closed-ended questions that measure these variables (e.g. 1=strongly agree, 2=agree, 3=neutral, 4=disagree, 5=strongly disagree, or 0=yes, 1=no).
Now write two open-ended questions that you think will test your hypothesis.
