Gwendolyn Bennett Heritage, Claude McKay Africa &
America, Langston Hughes The Negro Speaks of Rivers,
and, Countee Cullen Heritage. Each of these authors wrote
during the Harlem Renaissance a time when there was an
appreciation of black art. Thus, black artists were not only
allowed to create art about Africa, but they were expected to do
so even if they had never had any actual experience with the
continent. Keep in mind there was no formal training in African
history and culture for black peoples; they would have to gather
information about it and their connection through independent
research and reflection. For all four or at least three of the
aforementioned artists addresses the following: which of the
works seems to offer the sincerest interpretation of a country
neither author may have seen prior to this poem. You will need
to still identify a thesis and supportive statements, so
determine is your choice based on the imagery, tone, content,
etc? This is still an argument this is not asking for a historical
report. The essay is evaluated on the strength of your
argument and the comparison. Make sure to build a
successful case for the work you will inevitably compare to
the other 2-3.
