For this week’s discussion, I want you to think about your own experiences and encounters with social media, both as a producer and consumer. Have you noticed representations and/or comments on gender (and/or any of the other identity categories that we’ve discussed this semester) within social media posts? Do your own social media posts ever relate to or represent your gender identity specifically? For your discussion post, find an example of a social media post in which you can “read” something about gender. This doesn’t mean that the post has to be overtly or intentionally about gender, just that you can see some way in which gender and/or social norms around gender are represented, reinforced, subverted and/or critiqued. Embed a screen shot image of the social media post in your discussion post and write a well-developed paragraph (aim for around 200 words, about the length of this paragraph) in which you explain how/where you found the post (i.e., the context in which you viewed it) and give your “reading” of how you see gender in the post. Try to identify a post within your own usual social media browsing rather than searching for something that fits. Part of what I’d like you to do for this discussion is try to recognize representations of gender in your own normal media environment.
