Be sure to read the essay and citation guidelines posted on Blackboard, in Course Information, before writing. This is a response essay rather than an opinion piece, so work to remain closely engaged with the assigned texts. Do not use any sources other than those on the syllabus. Essays should be typed, double-spaced, paged-numbered and 4-6 pages long (excluding bibliography), with proper bibliographic citations. Name the file with your last name (example: Smith Essay 1). A bibliography of all sources used must be included at the end of the essay (see syllabus and paper guidelines for examples of bibliographic citations). Plagiarism in any form, of even a single line of text, will result in automatic failure and notification of college authorities
A few additional tips: dont forget to consult the essay and citation guidelines posted in Course Information and Syllabus. Read the prompt question several times as you are writing, and make sure everything you write is relevant to that question. Dont get lost in the ethnographic details; focus on the argument or main points the author is making. In this instance, Ortner and Rosaldo are trying to say something about the status of women everywhere. Why do Moore and Lamphere think these arguments are not universally applicable? Or, why are feminist archaeologists rethinking previously held ideas about how our early ancestors thought about and practiced gender difference? Try talking through your essay to someone; this will help ensure there is a logical flow, that you dont jump from one idea to the next without a progression of thought that takes the reader with you.
