In this assignment, you will write a 1400-1600 word essay in MLA format describing and analyzing an ethical system. You will then use the ethical system to solve a contemporary ethical issue of your choosing. Please use MLA formatting and cite all sources. Failure to cite sources in your paper (even if its accidental) is considered plagiarism and will result in a failing grade. When in doubt, include in-text citations for any material that isn’t your own.
First, choose a traditional ethical system. You will choose one from the following list:
Divine Command Ethics
Virtue Ethics
Natural Law Ethics
Kantian Duty Ethics
Utilitarian Ethics
Ethical Egoism
Social Contract Theory
Second, explain the principles, key terms, and goals of the system you’ve chosen. Explain the basics of the system, being sure to identify its founders, define key terms, and explain guiding principles. Describe how the system determines morally right and wrong behavior in general. This step of the paper should be the longest part. Many student make the mistake of omitting aspects of the ethical system, or only giving a surface level treatment. Spend enough time to make sure that you’ve explained the foundations and principles of the system you’ve chosen. I also expect you to mention common critiques and criticisms of the ethical system.
Third, choose a specific moral issue that people struggle with in our times. Note: In this part of the essay I want you to be specific about the issue you are talking about. For example, don’t choose something like “animal ethics.” Instead, be more specific: “testing cancer treatments in mice.” In this part of the essay, explain why you think the issue you have chosen is of concern to people in our times, giving some background and citing informed, academically-acceptable sources for your information where needed. You can use an issue that we’ve discussed in class or consider moral issues that you’ve seen in the news or other media. If you’d like feedback you can feel free to message me. Keep in mind that describing the issue is not the main focus of your paper. The ethical system is the main focus. This should be the shortest part of the paper.
Fourth, solve the problem, working through the logic and principles of the system you’ve chosen. Now, use the ethical system to solve the particular issue you’ve presented. I want to see that you understand the system and that you understand how it can solve an ethical issue.
NOTE: In this part of the essay, do your best not to merely revert to your own feelings, experiences, and opinions about the issue. The object of this section is to understand how a particular ethical system can be used to solve problems. Be fair and charitable to the system as you discuss its solution to the issue. You are more than welcome to use class material and our textbooks for this section. You may also consult outside sources such as the IEP or Stanford. Again, cite all sources where needed.
Finally, you will offer your critical evaluation of how that system has solved the issue. Your options are (1) agree with the system you chose and explain why; (2) disagree with it and explain why; or (3) agree with some of it and disagree with some of it and explain why. This is the part of the paper where you can develop and express your own view on the topic, but you must begin by critically evaluating the system’s solution. So, if the system does not go far enough, or it is insufficient in some way, this is your chance to offer a better solution. I want to see that you are using your critical thinking skills to present your own view on the topic. Note: each ethical system already has common critiques and criticisms. I expect you to mention common criticisms and standard critiques of the system you’ve selected.
