You need to answer TWO of the three prompts. Remember to be as specific as possible when writing your essays, but also ensure that your essay answers every part of the prompt. Additionally, please don’t just rip information off of the internet and turn it in as your own writing. If you plagiarize, I will give you a zero for the assignment.
Students need to write two different essays and turn those essays in at the same time. Simply put a couple of spaces between your first and second essay. Please, do not turn in the essays separately.
Prompts
In one of his most famous sermons, Massachusetts governor John Winthrop said, “For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us.” What does this mean and how did the idea of a “city upon a hill” influence the development of Puritan society? How did this notion also cause problems within the Puritan community? When answering this question, students must consider information from lecture and the readings.
Historian Howard Zinn wrote, “What made Bacon’s Rebellion especially fearsome for the rulers of Virginia was that black slaves and white servants joined forces.” Did Bacon’s Rebellion represent a turning point in American history? While answering that question, trace the development of labor systems over time in the American colonies. Use evidence to support your answer.
Thomas Jefferson described British actions prior to the American Revolution as “repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.” He also quoted Enlightenment philosophers when he wrote, “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.” Which was more influential in leading to the American Revolution: British actions or American ideas? Choose a side and provide evidence to support your answer.
