Instructions:
Download the article from the Assignments section of the course website on
Blackboard. Read the article actively this means asking questions (to yourself and to
the author) about the article as you read and making notes about what you agree and
disagree with and why. You might also want to go through your textbook and identify
the concepts that the article addresses.
Once you have a good understanding of the article, answer the following questions.
You will be submitting your answers as an attached file through the assignment link
on Blackboard assignments are not accepted through email for any reason. Your
final submission on Blackboard must be in either Microsoft Word (.DOC, .DOCX) or
Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) format to receive credit. I do not accept assignments in formats
other than PDF or MS-Word. SafeAssign will be used to check the percentage of
originality in your paper.
Format, Grammar, and Spelling (2.5 Points)
Your document should be double-spaced, with 1 inch to 1 ½ inch margins, in a 12-point
font, be free of spelling and grammatical errors, and be a minimum of four (4) pages in
length, not including a title and references page. Papers that are less than four (4)
pages in length will be ineligible to receive credit for the assignment. Do not use any
quotations in your paper; if you need to refer to a specific part of the article,
paraphrase and provide a citation.
Summary (2.5 points)
What is the subject (premise) of the article, and what are the questions and/or
hypotheses being investigated by the author? What conclusions does the author
reach about the cultural beliefs/values being addressed in the article?
Data and Methods (5 points)
What data did the author collect, and what methods did they use to get it?
Were these data and methods sufficient to provide a factual/realistic portrayal
of these people and their culture? Why or why not? You need to support your
answer with specific details from the article.
Cultural Relativism (7.5 points)
Did the author take a culturally relativistic approach to their research? Make an
argument either in favor of the authors unbiased and culturally relativistic
approach or against it, using specific examples to support your conclusion.
Viewpoint / Perspective (5 points)
What other viewpoints/perspectives (besides that of the author) were presented
in the article? Are there any other viewpoints/perspectives that should have
been addressed and, if so, why? Do not simply provide an opinion.
Relevance (2.5 points)
Explain why the article is important to the discipline of Anthropology. What
specific contributions does this article make to the discipline of Anthropology
and/or the study of human cultures? Do not simply restate your summary.
