This is a short paper concerning the value of Victim Impact Testimony in criminal sentencing. You will be expected to conduct outside research for this 2-part paper.
In a 2-page minimum paper in APA format (double spaced, cover and reference pages, intext citations), familiarize yourself with the Brock Turner Rape case and the Victim Impact Statement delivered by the victim. You should conduct outside research and/or use the text to learn about the facts of the case and the sentencing decision made by the judge. Also, review the victims Victim Impact Statement, accessible HERE. (see attached)
In your paper, address the following questions in a unified essay format (not individual short answers):
1. Describe the facts of the Brock Turner case, using the information from your book and/or outside research. Explain the courts sentencing decision.
2. Explain what a Victim Impact Statement is, and what it is intended to do in the sentencing phase, after a defendant has been found guilty.
3. Finally, and you may write this section in 1st person, review the Victim Impact Statement from the Brock Turner case and provide a response to it. Be sure to address your own personal response to the graphic details included, whether you believe that the judge took it into consideration in the sentencing decision, and what you feel an appropriate sentence would have been for Mr. Turner in light of that statement and the facts of the case (this may be a general recommendation, no need for specifics).
