In this module we have looked at social safety net programs and you have participated in a poverty simulation in determining what you would do if you found yourself in poverty. For some of you, the simulation is not necessary to understand poverty because it is your lived experience as a child or student.
Despite attempts to address the issue of poverty through social programs for the poor, we still find high levels of poverty. What causes poverty? Do you believe that it is mostly caused by lack of personal responsibility? How might the United States address issues of poverty (or is it even a problem at all)? Are there better solutions other than means-tested programs? What do you think would best improve the conditions of the poor in the United States?
