During this semester we have learned about the importance of Immigrant Letters. For this assignment,
using class lecture, the student will write a letter from an imaginary immigrant in the United States to
their family/friend(s) they have left behind in their country of origin, detailing their experience coming to a
new country and their experiences in the United States. The student may choose an immigrant from
Ireland, China or Germany during the Second Movement (aka First Wave).
Your letter will discuss:
1. Irish, Chinese or German Immigrant of the First Wave, 1820-1880.
2. A motivating factor for immigration that is supported by the immigrant experiences (push AND
pull);
3. The Process of Immigration for your Immigrant;
4. Your immigrants situation (job, housing, marriage, etc
)
5. A discussion on assimilation or acculturation of your immigrant;
6. A comparison to other immigrant groups that your immigrant have seen/encountered
7. A discussion of whether they want others to come join them or not and why.
8. Historically correct information about that immigrant group
9. Information from class only (no outside sources)
