Analysis literally means a breaking up or separation of something into its basic parts. As discussed in class, short stories can be examined and analyzed through the Five Elements of a Story and through the Literary/Rhetorical Devices.
In literary fiction, all of the literary devices/elements (setting, characterization, diction, plot, foreshadowing, symbolism, irony, tone, mood, etc.) work together to help formulate the narrative of the story.
For your literary paragraph, you need to discuss the use and significance of two literary devices in ONE of the two short stories examined in class: either Death by Scrabble or Lather And Nothing Else.
For each specific device, your task is to first show how your chosen literary/rhetorical device is used within the short story. Be sure to highlight where the device is used in the story and how it is used.
Secondly, you will then explain how or why the device is significant to the story by highlighting how the device is important to the storys plot, central conflict, setting, characterization/narration, and/or themes.
Your paragraph should be between 1 1.5 pages in length (approx. 250 400 words double-spaced)
Your paragraph needs to be structured properly, adhering to the model presented in class.
You need to use at least 1 quotation from your chosen short story for each chosen literary device as textual evidence in support of your points. Therefore, your paragraph should contain at least 2 quotations in total.
The paragraph must be typed and double-spaced and follow the guidelines of MLA format, as discussed in class. This includes being typed up in 12-point font, and in 11 point font times new Roman
