PurposeIn October 2005, the member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) unanimously adopted the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. The Declaration aims to affirm “the commitment of the international community to respect a certain number of universal principles for humanity in the development and application of science and technology.” Since its affirmation, much has been written in support and as a critique of this document.
