What should be the major involvement of a school nurse in special education programs? School nurses are at the forefront to catch a medical need for the student while outside of the home. Children are in school 9 months out of a year and the nurse can be a powerful advocate for the students, families and community. School nurses can educate the students early on in their life and deter bad habits and educate them on their chronic illness. They have the opportunity to identify needs for medical, behavioral or dental care and provide them with resources within the community. School nurses assess and screen the students and are required to identify any health needs that may be a barrier to the students’ education.
