In the King James Version of the Bible, Mark 10:42-45 states that “Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Christ was the greatest example of a servant leader and this verse shows that He wanted his disciples to know how to serve others to be good leaders. Becoming a servant leader is the first step of being a good statesman. However, a good statesman must have personal skills or what is known as statescraft in order to work in a constitutional and representative democracy. This discussion board will look to define each of these qualities as they pertain to good statesmanship.
There is a slight difference between constitutionalism and a representative democracy and understanding both terms is important to understanding the role of good statesmanship. The theory of constitutionalism in the United States proposes a system of checks and balances in which administrative officials share powers with judges, legislators, and other executives (Newbold, 2017, pg. 550). However, a representative democracy ensures that every citizen has the right to vote for his/her choice of government official. The United States is an excellent example of both systems since all citizens over the age of eighteen have the right to vote and the government is split into three branches of government. However, in order to be an effective public administrator, there needs to be an inclusive definition of good statesmanship. Per the reading, statesmanship “is the art of directing matters to promote the public interest and to add a ‘classical’ touch educating or ennobling the public” (Newswander, 2012). Statesmanship is critical to be a good public leader. However, since public office relies on both interpersonal and personal relationships, a good statesman must be able to conduct business with good personal skills (Denhardt, Denhardt, and Blanc, 2014, pg. 2). A good example positive personal skill is transparency within the public office since it establishes trust between constituents. “Transparency has become an increasingly important goal in public administration because it allows the public to develop a more accurate picture of what is happening inside a government” (Newbold, 2017, pg. 549).
