Please answer the following questions for the drafts of everyone in your workshop group. Do not write your answers by hand;
type your answers electronically and print the finished revision worksheet for the author. The thoroughness and helpfulness
of your comments here will be a significant part of your workshop participation grade.
1.
Is the thesis statement clear and focused? Is it interesting, grounded, and specific? Is it an arguable
point? Is it sufficiently detailed? Is it placed where readers will notice it?
2. Do the topic sentences clearly relate to the thesis and introduce the argument of their respective
paragraphs?
3. Does each paragraph support or elaborate on the thesis?
4. Can you follow the essay’s organization? Do you have any suggestions for better organization?
5. What do you think of the essay’s sources? Are they all credible? Are they all suitable for a serious
academic essay? Does the essay cite at least two sources from scholarly, peer-reviewed periodicals?
6. Are all quotations grammatically integrated into the author’s text (cf. Hacker ch. 31)? Does each
quotation include all three parts of the “quote sandwich” (TSIS ch. 3)? Are there any dropped quotes?
7. Are there any details that seem irrelevant, unimportant, or repetitious? Are there areas that seem
distracting or not connected to the thesis?
8. Has the writer completely discussed and addressed everything promised in the thesis statement and the
introduction?
9. Correct any grammatical errors that you can detect on your copy of the draft. Also look for errors in the
use of MLA documentation style.
