Degree Objective: Why I wish to Master in Statistics from the xxx University
Numbers and their application, as well as importance in every aspect of human
endeavors, have always fascinated me since I was a child. This interest shaped my decision to
study statistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. My excellent performance in
Mathematics and Physics at the high school also affirmed that the desire to pursue a career in the
numeric profession is the right ambition. After eighteen months of study at Shanghai Institute of
Technology in China, I discovered that I needed a more intellectually stimulating and challenge
environment to achieve my personal and professional goals of being an expert in statistics.
Therefore, I transferred to xxx University in the United States to fulfill the need for a
comprehensive and quality education that serve as a foundation for further studies in the same
discipline.
During my career of undergraduate, I did a lot of preparation on the future development
in statistic field. Since statistics as a field that needs to deal with masses of data, the ability to use
related software is an effective and efficient way of sharpening my data analysis skills.
Therefore, I took many statistical courses which include the course that teaching application of
the software R and SAS. This is mainly because I know the importance of mastering the two
computer programs, which is vital in the applied statistics field. I spare no effort to study in this
line of knowledge. Besides, I also have a good grasp of the theoretical statistics. Also, I firmly
believe that the various subjects and courses, taken during my undergraduate program are the
necessary academic background that equips me with the aptitude and technical skills to succeed
in the Master’s program. With the solid basic knowledge in statistics, I can quickly enter graduate
study state.

As an international student, I extremely treasure the chance of studying statistics in the
United States. The level of democracy that provides international students with the essential
freedom of interaction and community participation is also adorable in the USA. These elements
of this country made me adapt quicker than I thought. Even though I at first encountered some
problems that were caused by cultural and linguistic differences, I soon adjusted myself and
became integrated into the local community. The study at xxx University fulfilled my
undergraduate life since the different cultures broaden my view on the world and strengthen my
love in the field of statistics. In addition, the period spent in the United States has exposed me to
opportunities and prospects in the profession and influenced my decision to pursue advanced
studies in statistics. Furthermore, the problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills that I
acquired would become valuable during the training program.
My postgraduate studies plan is to focus on the application of data analytics. Even though
I have learned basic knowledge about statistics, when it comes to the real application, I still need
to enhance this aspect of knowledge. Meanwhile, my decision to apply for a Master’s degree in
Statistics from Columbia University is not only supported by interest and academic background
but the institution’s reputation for focusing on innovative research methodologies in the delivery
of its programs as well. As a preparation for the demands and rigors of the course, I took my
internship at a real estate firm so as to familiarize myself with the real-world application of
principles and concepts taught in class. While applying my theoretical knowledge in the
classification of the safety levels of different buildings, I discovered that I still have a lot to learn
in this discipline, hence my decision to apply to this prestigious institution as a means to deepen
my understanding the course. Therefore, the graduate studies can strengthen my ability of
application and promote me into a higher level of statistics study.
Surname 3
I would like to be a part of Columbia University and devote myself to the field of
statistics. Also, since I also have high interests in the research of developing and researching
artificial intelligence field and related field, I hope to participate in related research and
development work in the future. Since the statistics program in Columbia offers many courses on
the machine learning and focuses on the applied statistics, I see it as the ideal university to make
my future profession ambitions and dreams come true. A dream is hard to realize, but it can be
realized. After graduation, I hope to participate in the work that relates to developing database
platforms that improve the accuracy analysis and be able to support the high volume of data.
Even with these ambitions in mind, I still adore statistics as a postgraduate course
because of the great opportunities it offers the learner. First, the world has embraced statistics. I
was reading on a health topic and realized that in the US, the health delivery system is now
moving towards data-driven healthcare delivery initiatives. The federal government and the local
governments need statistical data in form of the census which has to be analyzed, interpreted and
presented. Inferential statistics provided the basis for employee performance appraisal in
organizations, and these are just but a few examples. I believe, that I can be more purposeful if I
embraced statistics because my knowledge can assist almost all industries, and is not selective of
the organization size or specialty.
Finally, Columbia University is one of the leading schools in the world and plays a
prominent role in this field. Consequently, I definitely can learn more advanced knowledge there.
The university has access to vast resources necessary to education, and more so statistics, which
can provide students with plenty of chances of doing research. The university has other
postgraduate students who can be great peers and support during my learning, and America has
never been short of professors. I am social, but the aspect I adore most in myself is that I am a

Columbia statistics fraternity. The research culture of Columbia University draws my attention,
