This is another assignment that is for the course I am retaken.  I didn’t score very well on this paper so it can either be reworded or rewritten with additional support.  The highlighted and red items in the paper is from the professor.  The paper is APA and I left out the entire header.  Any questions please let me know.   I have attached the old paper, instructions, and rubric. Also, if any information is used from old paper it would need to be reworded to pass plagiarism checks.

Career Exploration Paper
Liberty University
Dr. Caron Blizzard
Since I have a vested interest in helping others, my career choice to pursue is School Counselor.
I believe that my personal skill set along with my educational endeavors will serve me well in
this regard. My personal skillset is a good fit with this choice of occupation and it includes my
interests of helping people and participating in the educational realm. Learning more about this
career choice can help to cement this direction overall. Unless otherwise cited, the career
information presented in this paper was obtained from O*NET On-Line (National Center for
O*NET Development, 2014).
Career Field and Occupation of Choice
Paragraph indentation? The occupation in question falls under the general heading of
“psychologist.” However, the specific career direction for this profession would be school
counselor or school psychologist. This position comes with a heavy load of responsibility, but
ultimately, I would be working to help students achieve to their greatest potential.
Nature of the Work
Paragraph indentation? The nature of this work is diverse and includes a number of various
tasks. For instance, school psychologists can address serious behavioral problems, help
students with issues happening at home and address in-class issues that are recurring among
students. Conversely, the nature of this work also includes more surface issues like
misunderstandings between students, assistance with social issues and mediation services
(National Center for O*NET Development, 2014). There is no typical day in this profession as
one day might consist of nothing but student mediation, while another might include meeting
with parents who have children exhibiting learning disabilities or behavioral issues to setting up
on-site career fairs and things of that nature. Each day would be different. Active listening,
perception, speaking and service orientation are all required skills (National Center for O*NET
Development, 2014). These are all traits that I possess. What additional character traits might
be listed?
Working Conditions
Working conditions can be tricky because the general realm of education is not exactly known
for its bevvy of resources. As such, it is challenging to work in environment where there is a
constant struggle for resources in which to just do your job. While I would be working
independently, I would still be part of a larger team, which would guard against isolation. The
structure would be the same as that of a school, where I would be working under the auspices
of the principal. I would also have a close working relationship with the teachers and likely with
the school counselor or assistant principal to set up child study meetings at the school in order
to ensure that we are able to address issues of behavior together. Collaboration is the key to
success school counseling positions. What more should be included here?
Preparation and Qualifications
A great deal of education is required for this position. For instance, almost half of those polled
via O*NET have post-doctoral training in psychology (National Center for O*NET Development,
2014). That lets me know that an advanced degree is a requirement for optimal job prospects in
this position. Additionally, in order to be successful from an educational and professional
vantage point, it is also important to have some base of knowledge in the STEM discipline
(science, technology, engineering and math) (National Center for O*NET Development, 2014).
Personal traits have not been listed here. Licensing requirements?
Opportunities and Future Outlook
The potential for growth in this sector is significant. According to the Bureau for Labor Statistics
(2012), the field is expected to grow as much as 12% in the next decade. There are
opportunities for internships, which allows for me to find the right fit with an institution before
signing on for good. Projections for your state/region? Potential opportunities for career
advancement?
Economic and Non-Economic Benefits
Any position obtained through the educational system is not necessarily one that is paying the
best. However, with this particular job type, the income prospects are better than most other
school-related positions. For instance, according to the Bureau for Labor Statistics, this position
earns – on average – almost $70,000 annually. This equates to roughly $33/hour. This is an
important advantage to this career choice because like most educational positions, there are
likely to be many times where before or after-hours work is required. There is not usually
added compensation for time spent out of work doing things for the job. Non-economic
benefits would include components like job choice. This is not a position that is tied to any one
area or another. Since I am not teaching in a classroom, I don’t need educational certification
for each state or school district. In other words, a position like this one has a great deal of
flexibility that doesn’t necessarily exist for other facets of this industry. Licensing requirements?
Moreover, because of the economic benefit, chances are good that should I choose to work in
districts that are less desirable or dealing with a high number of students that have behavioral
problems or districts that are struggling to accommodate large swaths of students in need of
the kinds of social services provided by a school psychologist.
Disadvantages and Special Situations
Being a school psychologist is not the easiest job. There are many times where I may have to
contend with students that don’t want my help or are unwilling to help themselves.
Additionally, as a counselor, there will be times where there is something going with a student
and the parents or the administration (or both) are simply unresponsive. This is a major
disadvantage to my position. Special situations will be common in this position because it is the
nature of the counseling realm overall.
Conclusion
School counselors are significantly important to the well-being of students attending school at
all ages. They are the lifeline for many students that would not otherwise have access to
important resources that bridge the gap between troubles at home and the respite they get
from it at school. Moreover, school psychologists are able to identify potential psychological
issues early onhopefully early! (the referral process can be an interesting one) to prevent them
from worsening before anyone realizes what is wrong. It is the opportunity to work with
students and have an influence on their educational endeavors without necessarily being in the
classroom.
