English 1140 Literary Research Project and Presentation On The Poem
Musee des Beaux Arts. by W. H. AUDEN
Purpose: To offer your classmates essential biographical information on an
author and provide important details about the historical context and critical
interpretation of his/her work.
Learning Outcomes: This assignment addresses the following learning
outcomes for the course:


Apply basic critical theories to demonstrate a competent understanding
of literary texts
Describe the development of literature within its larger cultural context,
showing how concerns in literature reflect the changes, patterns and
values of the culture
Audience: Your classmates and instructor
Format: The written portion of this project will come in the form of a Word
document. The presentation portion of this project will come in the form of a
PowerPoint or Prezi.
Points: 100 Points (60 points for the written document and 40 Points for the
Presentation)
Sources and Documentation Style: You must use at least 6 sources for this
project, integrate MLA in-text citation throughout, and attach a MLA Works
Cited Page
Note: Use credible sources for this project—preferably from university and
college sties (.edu), databases like JSTOR and EbscoHost Academic Search
Premier, or newspapers and magazines like the New York Times or The Atlantic
Monthly
Sources to Avoid: Wikipedia is not a credible website since it is open to
editing by various users. Avoid other encyclopedias as well since these will
provide only a broad introduction to your topic. Avoid sites written and created
by students (class projects posted on YouTube etc.). Avoid general .COM sites
(including About.COM, BookRags.COM etc.). If you have any questions
about the credibility of your sources, please ask!
You are required provide all of the following:

Biographical Background:
Provide useful details about your author’s life, including when he/she was
doing his/her major work. Please avoid plagiarizing the language of your
sources. Try to include what you find interesting and fascinating about this
person (quirky hobbies, life experiences etc.) Don’t bore your audience with
the nonessentials (ex. “John’s great-grandfather was of Polish descent and he
really enjoyed hunting”). Length: 200- 250 words in your Written
Document. Use a portion of this information for your presentation.

Themes and Topics
Tell us the specific themes/topics he/she focuses upon. What was his/her goal
or purpose in his/her work? What drove or motivated him/her to do the work
he/she did? How did people react to this person’s work? Length: 200- 250
words in your Written Document. Use a portion of this information for
your presentation.

Critical Interpretations
Offer two detailed interpretations by a literary critic of the short story, novel,
poem, or play that we are studying. Explain how critics have historically
interpreted this specific work. Explain how this example reflects a major
theme/concern of the person.
Length: 200- 250 words in your Written Document. Use a portion of this
information for your presentation.

Summary and Links to Useful Resources. Provide summaries and
links to three useful sources about your assigned work. Try to include a
least one-multimedia source about your work (multimedia may include
any of the following: youtube videos in the form of interviews with your
author, NPR stories about your author or work, audio links to poems
etc.) Length: Your summary of each source should be 150 words for a
total of 450 words for this section. Use a portion of this information
for your presentation

Visuals
Provide useful visuals (of your author, their works, anything interesting about
them etc.) throughout your project.
