Teacher Feedback on the Chosen Topic: ” THE GREAT GATSBY ”
“All this looks good. When selecting your articles for your research paper, I’d encourage you to select ones that are only about Gatsby itself (not where Gatsby is mentioned as one example among many or used as a prop for teaching technique–these articles should probably have Gatsby in the title??????????; the ones you found from JSTOR look good for the most part).  ”

Assignment:

Research Paper
This research paper builds on your previous prewriting—your topic selection, preliminary research, and annotated bibliography. It should be 13-15 pages (of content) and arranged according to the following structure:
The first 6 or so pages should overview the 6 journal articles you found on your chosen novel. Arrange your discussion of these articles chronologically and offer your readers a critical history of the novel by explaining the arguments each article makes, what theoretical assumptions undergird those interpretations, and what central interpretive challenges about the book this historical overview turns on. In other words, what are the central aspects of the novel that drive critics to arrive at different conclusions and why?
In the next 3-4 pages, you will assess these various interpretations, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses, explaining which interpretations clash with each other and why and which might complement another’s analysis. Basically, in this section, you are guiding your readers through the critical history to help us make better sense of it and to know what our own conclusions should be.
In the final 3-4pages or so, you will present your own interpretation of the novel, especially as it arises out of your study of this critical history and your assessment of the interpretations offered. In so doing, you should reveal your stance on the theoretical questions that underlie literary interpretation itself.
You will use only the 6 journal articles and the primary source (novel) for developing this paper.
