1. Identify several steps that all Americans can take to ensure that they are effective health
care consumers. Are these steps reasonable for individuals who are homeless or live in
poverty? Is healthcare coverage affordable to the average American family? Why or why
not?
2. Some people choose not to acquire health care even though they may qualify for it. What
impact do you believe that has on those who pay for health care coverage?
3. Given what you’ve learned in this chapter about the health effects of sleep, what might be
some of the long-term health consequences related to getting relatively little sleep? What
are some of the factors (cultural, economic, social) that might lead certain groups to use
sleep medication more than others?
4. Is the general rule of getting eight hours of sleep really accurate for everyone? Just like
water consumption, is the general rule to drink eight glasses of water a day accurate for
everyone? Regarding sleep, what are some variables that might make the need for sleep
less or more than eight hours?
5. What are some of the reasons people may get too much sleep? In other words, what are
some medical, psychological, physical, and/or environmental reasons for “being sleepy”?
6. Discuss some changes that you have personally considered or implemented based on the
knowledge gained in this class. How might these changes positively impact both your
personal health and the environment?
7. What are some specific ways you can reduce or eliminate the sugary drinks you consume
(which could also reduce overall caloric intake)? What are some specific ways you can
incorporate regular physical activity? How do you intend to maintain the changes you make
once they are implemented?
