Taiyuan, the name of a city, and most Americans may not know any information about this
city. Actually, it is one of the largest city in China, and it is also my hometown. I have lived
here for over ten years. Taiyuan is located in north of China, and over twenty million people
are living in here. Taiyuan is a political, cultural and economic center of Shanxi Province. Troy,
the only one foreign city I will be there maybe four years. I have been living in Troy from July.
Although this is not a long period of time, I know some information about this city. Troy is a
small city with small population. In addition, the local economy is not very good. There are
many differences in terms of economy and habits between Troy and Taiyuan, but they also
have some similarities about sport.
The economic development of Taiyuan is much better than Troy. The obvious thing is that
people cannot find any big mall with luxury brand in Troy. In addition to the water towers,
people cannot see any tall buildings. However, people will see a completely different situation
in Taiyuan. In my hometown, you can find one of the most prosperous street in China. Many
local residents and visitors all love this street, because they can buy anything they need.
Another big difference between two cities is the mode of economic development. The
economic development of Taiyuan is composed of two parts, Real Estate development and
natural resources. Like many cities in China, Real Estate development is an important part of
economic development. Land development makes local residents have enough money to
invest, and government can spend a lot of money on public facilities. Another important part
of economic development is natural resources. A lot of coal and steel were mined, so that the
local government has sufficient funds to develop the city. I think agriculture is the main part
of economic development in Troy because of a lot of farms. It is impossible to see the big
farms like Troy in my hometown. Public transits are also very different. In my hometown, there
are many taxi and bus, and people never worry that they will miss the bus. Metro is being
built this year. However, a large number of cars makes traffic becomes congested. But there
is a completely different situation in Troy. I have never seen a case of traffic congestion, and
drivers all allow the rules. Then public transit is very poor in Troy, I cannot find any bus station
or taxi in here instant I have seen them on the road.
Then different habits are obvious. At first, people have different eating habits. In my
hometown, our main foods are noodles and rice, and my hometown’s noodles is very famous
in China. Pork and Lamb are the main meats we often eat. But in Troy, people usually eat beef
and chicken like another Americans. In China, people usually have a napping after lunch, many
Chinese people think it is a good way to break. Then after I got to America, I found American
people do not have this habit, and sometimes I can see some people exercise every afternoon.
Also, party is an important part of people’s life. I have a neighbor, and he always invite his
friends to the house for the party every weekends. In Taiyuan, people like to go to a restaurant
with their friends, and they can talk much in there.
The greatest similarity between Taiyuan and Troy is sport. Troy has the strong football
team, and many people are interested in it. In Taiyuan, we have a basketball team, and they
can get good grades in the race. Although this basketball team is not a strong team if they
were in America, people still love it and like to watch their games.
